The Mollys B.
Two gals known to be plucky. Gutsy. Maybe a little headstrong.
Meet the two Mollys—one a renowned survivor of the sinking of the RMS Titanic, the other a determined heifer with an indomitable spirit. Living a century apart, they share more than just a name; their deeper bond is a legacy of courage.
The Mollys B.
Indomitable. Determined. Fearless.
Living a century apart, Margaret Tobin Brown of Titanic notoriety and a brockle-faced heifer of Montana renown share an experience of a singular day that forced them to fight for their lives and unites them in more than a sobriquet. This picture book biography documents their brave actions, telling side-by-side stories of hope and resilience.

Storystorm 2025 Day 12: Joann Howeth Chooses Parallel Story-Telling
Great Falls Tribune
THE MOLLYS B. - despite living a century apart, share an experience that unites them in more than a name,” said Joann Howeth of the motivation for her work. “I have placed Molly the cow side-by-side with the original Unsinkable Molly, Margaret Tobin Brown, after whom she was named by Del Morris, the manager of the slaughter yard at the time.”
“The author sketches the remarkable lives of two very different Mollys: Molly Brown, whose story begins in 1912 when she boards the Titanic, and Molly Bovine (aka Number 469), a cow living on a Montana ranch in 2006. Howeth’s prose is both informational and rhythmic as she frequently uses mirroring language to connect the characters. Howeth delivers an informative and adventurous tale filled with strong females (of varying species). Van Wyk’s illustrations consist of loose lines, bold watercolors, and whimsical character designs reminiscent of Quentin Blake’s famous drawings for Roald Dahl.
A charmingly illustrated, fact-filled journey that teaches children the power of perseverance.”

“Howeth cleverly uses dual narratives to highlight themes of resilience and survival, showing that courage knows no bounds whether it is a woman on a sinking ship or a cow escaping an inevitable fate. The Mollys B. is an uplifting story about perseverance . . .that will leave readers rooting for both Mollys.”

2023 Writer’s Digest Writing Competition
Placing in the 2023 Writer’s Digest Writing Competition
I know that many people don’t consider contests that require an entry fee as “legitimate,” but I balance that assessment with the argument that I’m happy to get my work in front of judges. Entering any contest is a way to do that. The Writer’s Digest contests in particular receive thousands of entries across several categories, so the final list of winners is a small and select group of writers – namely, “the cream of the crop.” It’s an honor to be recognized.
Regarding the MOLLYS, I sincerely believe in this story, and the award from WD and its judges has validated my vision for it.
Besides, it’s always exciting to open an email that starts off by saying “Congratulations!”
